The Sorcerer
June 18–26, 2011
One of Gilbert and Sullivan’s earliest operettas, The Sorcerer is the tale of a young couple who want everyone to be happily mated, but inadvertently set off ridiculous pairings of townspeople through the misuse of John Wellington Wells’ magic tea potion. Come see this beloved operetta with a new twist; Bollywood style meets Victoriana. What magic will be needed to restore order?
You can order tickets on the Lyric Theatre website (the discount code is "spells") or for the next day or so, there's a Groupon special.

Today I am breaking in a new pair of character shoes.
mastersantiago has already made fun of me -- I'm wearing the character shoes with white socks, sweatpants and an orange t-shirt. Not my normal housecleaning gear. I think the shoes have another half-hour or so to go before I trade them out for my sneakers, but I have a dance rehearsal tonight, so I'll put them back on then.
Yesterday I spent the day working on costumes for Iolanthe and I'm pretty frustrated. The dresses that I pulled for the womens' chorus look awful. The ladies look like they're wearing bags with flowers on them. And the peers' cloaks are disgusting. The fur mantles are matted and stained with old makeup, they're dusty and they stink. I can't make an actor wear that, it's gross. I got home last night, tired and dirty and grumpy, to find that
mastersantiago had washed the dishes and fixed dinner, which improved my mood. Sent an email off to the director and producer with my thoughts for fixing the costume fail, and now I'm waiting to see if they'll go with it.
I knew there was a chance that I'd have to skip Beltane to work on the show, and it will depend a lot on what I hear back from the director and producer today, but I'm pretty sure at this point Beltane is off my calendar entirely. I can't say I'm too broken up about it, though. I should know by the end of the day.

Okay, gang! I know it's kinda short notice, but we're all clear to hold a yard sale at Spring Coronet next Saturday from 1 - 3 pm. We're going to set up an area hopefully near the stone privies with a bunch of picnic tables so everybody has a place to set out their stuff, or bring a blanket and set up on the ground.
Bring your well-loved junk and find it a new home, and trade your well-loved cash for someone else's treasures.
I know a couple of you have said that you can't be there that day; give me a call and I'll try to work out pickups and dropoffs.

Back in January or so, Countess LotL mentioned having some SCA gear she'd like to get rid of -- stuff she'd rather recoup some money for rather than donating it to Ducal or one of the other auctions. Southern Shores Newcomers' Tourney was suggested as a good place to hold it. Not too long ago,
mad_duchess also mentioned getting rid of some of her stuff, so I did a little checking around.
Turns out the City of San Jose will not allow us to sell our gear in the city parks, so Newcomers' isn't going to work out. Coronet might work, however, so I'm going to find out what the county parks' rules are about vending -- since merchants are allowed at Coronet, I don't think we'd have any trouble being permitted to sell stuff, but we might have to pay a merchanting fee and I'm not sure off the top of my head what that fee is. I know it's in the contract, though, so it'll be easy enough to find out.
Anybody else interested?

A couple of fast, challenging projects turned out to be exactly what I needed to shake off the blah.
( I know it's way late for a 12th Night report, )
( But wait, there's more! )
Tonight is Mt. Laundry, with a base camp set up at Dirty Dishes Station. I need a clean space to start creating again.

Take a bunch of good friends and the best worst movie I've seen in ages: Sharktopus. Okay, so the baby twins were a little freaked out, but the rest of us were laughing so hard that I think by the end the kids had relaxed and found it pretty silly as well.
We covered the dining room table with paper and made Halloween sugar cookies, while
mastersantiago grilled pork loin and tri-tip and the biggest, yellowest, yummiest peaches.
Brined the pork loin in soy sauce, honey, ginger, garlic, star anise, allspice and pepper, and served sweet potatoes whipped with garlic, ginger and cream.
I suppose I should wash dishes, but I'm too busy being in a food coma right now.

Along with everything else last week, I had my thyroid levels checked, and once again, I'm underperforming. The doctor upped my meds, and for the last four nights I've actually had (mostly) uninterrupted sleep.
*sigh* You'd think I wouldn't be surprised.
